Energy Vampires and Protection

27 October 2026

A translucent veiled figure, half dissolved into smoke.
Some people leave you thinner than they found you.

The veil between worlds thins as Halloween approaches, and with it comes something most people do not talk about: heightened energy.

If you are sensitive to the people around you, you may know the feeling. You leave a crowd exhausted. Somebody else’s emotional weight lands on you like a physical thing. The holidays, family gatherings, busy shops, and all the pressure that comes with them can make it feel stronger.

I know how this sounds. But energy is not a metaphor to me. I have felt it my whole life. When you are sensitive to other people, you can often tell whether someone is happy, neutral, sad, or in a dark place before they say much at all.

The two kinds of energy vampire

In my experience, there are two kinds of people who drain your energy.

The first kind does not know they are doing it. They are not necessarily trying to hurt anyone. They may have a great many needs, a lot of energy, or a lot going on in their lives, but they do not know how to give anything back. People around them simply end up exhausted.

The second kind knows what they are doing. They are rarer, but they exist. They deliberately pull at the people around them and use energy drain as an attack.

Most of the people you meet will be in the first group. That matters, because protection is not about deciding everyone around you is dangerous. It is about recognising when an interaction is taking more from you than you can give.

What energy drain feels like

If you are sensitive, you probably have your own examples.

  • A friend leaves you exhausted even though you only sat and talked.
  • A family member’s emotional weight follows you around after a gathering.
  • A crowded room overwhelms you in a way that is more than noise or activity.
  • You feel like you are carrying somebody else’s pain alongside your own.

For me, crowded grocery-store aisles could feel like a power overload. I did not have words for it when I was young. I only knew that being around too many people at once could hurt.

Living with somebody who has chronic pain makes it more complicated. Their pain has an energy signature. If you are empathic, you can begin carrying some of that weight too. Over time it leaves you tired, run down, and unable to tell what belongs to you and what does not.

I have written about that separately — being a healing empath, and what it cost me when I was reading all day and taking on other people’s physical pain along with their worry: The Addiction Nobody Talks About. What is in this piece is the other half of it, the part that keeps you out of that state instead of describing it afterwards.

That is why protection matters before you reach the point of being completely drained.

Protection begins with a boundary

The strongest protection begins in your mind.

Put your attention around the things you do not want other people to reach. Build a mental boundary. This does not have to be complicated or dramatic. It is practical. When somebody pulls at you, consciously or unconsciously, it happens through emotional connection and attention. You can turn that down. You can make a clear line between what is yours and what belongs to them.

This is especially important during the holidays. People are closer together, stress runs high, and you may not always have a choice about who you are around.

Protecting your energy is not about being cold. It is about protecting what is yours.

Recovery matters just as much

When you absorb somebody else’s energy, emotions, pain, or presence, there needs to be recovery afterwards.

The other person may need time to settle after the interaction. You do too. You need to release what you have taken on instead of carrying it into the next conversation, the next day, or the next tarot reading.

Grounding can help. A walk, quiet time, meditation, or simply being alone for a while can give you room to come back to yourself.

This is the same discipline I wrote about in What I do between readings — the break is not a luxury, it is the thing that keeps you able to read at all.

A note for solitary practitioners

If you read tarot alone, practise solitary witchcraft, or keep your spiritual life mostly private, you may already spend less time in large groups. That can be a good thing. It can also mean that when you do encounter heavy energy at work, in a crowded shop, at a family gathering, or through somebody reaching out to you, it hits harder.

Do not feel bad about recognising when somebody’s energy is off. Do not feel selfish about protecting yourself. You do not have to take on everything another person brings into the room.

Being sensitive is not a curse or a problem you need to solve. It is part of who you are. Use it gently. Use it carefully. But use it.

Just know what you are dealing with, especially in the high-energy season ahead.
